This May, Somerset hosts the 151st Royal Bath and West Show. One of the country’s top celebrations of agriculture, this four day event is a fantastic treat for the whole family. Taking place on the UK’s premier permanent showground, just outside of Shepton Mallet, a jam-packed schedule of events awaits you this spring.
At the centre of the Royal Bath and West Show lies the celebration of great British livestock. Exhibitors from across the country turn out in their droves to show off their prized sheep, pigs, goats and cattle. Alongside this, over 2000 horses and ponies can be seen in displays and show jumping competitions. Furry friends and small creatures can be enjoyed in the Fur and Feather arena, whilst falconry displays, terrier racing and fishing shows can be observed beside the lake at the Living Countryside exhibit. For lovers of British wildlife and agriculture, the show is a definite must.
The Royal Bath and West Show offers a range of family orientated activities. With a wealth of animals and livestock on site the Farming for the Family experience is at the heart of the show. Children can participate in hands on activities such as baking and calf feeding, wonder at the new born livestock and have all their questions answered by farmers and vets to hand. For the outdoor pursuits fans the Off-Road 4X4 course and Canoe Village offer a thrilling experience, whilst the Imagineering Fair provides fun and education in one. Here, children (and grown-ups!) of all ages can explore the worlds of technology and engineering through a variety of displays, demonstrations and interactive activities.
This years show boasts some new additions to its traditional line up. The British Cider Championships, the country’s largest celebration of scrumpy, will allow visitors to enjoy a range of ciders in the company of expert brewers. For food enthusiasts, the British Cheese Awards offer up a taste sensation, whilst for land lovers, green fingered talks and demonstrations will be held in the newly allocated specialist gardening area. Two new specialist arenas are to be erected, the first showcasing local independent merchants and their unique products, the second dedicated to all things equestrian. This year also hosts the Golden Sheers 50th anniversary with competitors from all over the world displaying their incredible sheep shearing skills.
