Closing the summer season on the last weekend of August, Mintfest hits the streets of Kendal, bringing one of the UK’s top international street and performance art festivals to this picturesque market town. A weekend packed with entertainment of every form imaginable, Kendal will burst at the seams with inspiring acts from all over the world. Still in its infancy, currently entering its third year, the calibre of performances on offer has established Mintfest as an arts festival of superb quality.
Whilst the full programme for Mintfest 2014 is yet to be announced, some of this years confirmed highlights from the UK include: ‘The Soul of Fado’, a contemporary fire and dance extravaganza performed by individual dance artist Nuno Silva; ‘The Legend of Hamba’, an African mystery play devised and performed by Tiata Fahodzi, the UK’s premier African theatre company and ‘The Lift’, a roving, interactive and spontaneous theatrical show from eccentric ensemble Wet Picnic. Many of the acts to appear at Mintfest work in collaboration with Without Walls, a consortium of organisations committed to the progression of outdoor arts in the UK and abroad.
Not only does Mintfest stage the best of UK street art, it also brings international talent to the fore. Currently there are 10 confirmed international companies scheduled to appear with more to follow. Highlights include; the enchanting aerial display of FullStop Acrobatics, an international duo hailing from England and the Netherlands; the marionette mastery of Belgium’s La Compagnie DeFo in their wonderfully wild show ‘La Menagerie’ and the dazzling performances of Les Krilati, a French circus company combining traditional arts with a contemporary approach as they develop their ‘new circus’ style.
When night falls on the street performances, the culture continues after dark at The Brewery Arts Centre, located a mere 10 minute walk from the centre of Kendal town. The Brewery Arts Centre Gardens will host the festivals World Music stage whilst The Brewery Malt room provides late night entertainment with its comedy cabarets.
Mintfest 2014 opens on Friday 29th August and runs through to Sunday 31st. Whilst the majority of the performances are open air and free to view there are some exclusive shows that are ticket only. Pay to view shows will be advertised with tickets available for purchase in July.
