Getting ready for summer: what to do in Taunton

22 June 2019

The market town of Taunton is a beautiful and convenient location to explore the beaches of the South West and Somerset.

But even in its own right, Taunton has a wealth of attractions and fun for all the family.

Here’s what to do in Taunton this summer.

1. Taunton town centre

Taunton is a beautiful town centre and has a wide range of high street shops and local restaurants to choose from to spend your day locally exploring.

If the weather is particularly nice, you can prepare a picnic and have lunch at Vivary Park, situated by the beautiful Sherford Stream. Vivary Park also has a tennis course, miniature golf course, a playground and model train railway.

2. Clarks Village Outlet

For a bargain day of shopping a little more further afield, Clarks Village Shopping in Glastonbury is a renowned outlet located in the South West.

Just a 40-minute drive from Days Inn Taunton, Clarks Village is open from 9am to the early evening most days and has everything from books to sportswear at discounted prices.

3. Weston-super-Mare

Take a 40-minute drive north of Taunton for the perfect sea-side day out to Weston-super-Mare, one of Britain’s top-rated beach destinations!

Weston-super-Mare has all the beachfront attractions you could need. Head to the Grand Pier for an indoor theme park, beautiful sea-views, café’s, restaurants and play areas for children.

Take a walk a little further away from the beachfront for a town centre with good variety of high street shops and restaurants, alongside other attractions such as a Helicopter Museum, and the Winter Gardens complex.

4. Hestercombe House and Gardens

A top place to visit this summer in Taunton is Hestercombe Gardens, boasting 50 acres of woodland, lakes and gardens for you to spend the day exploring.

Experience a trio of Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian examples of garden design. Visitors are also transported back in time to discover a wealth of history, including a restored 17th-century watermill.

When you’re finished exploring Hestercombe Gardens, you can grab a quick coffee at the Stables Café, indulge in an afternoon tea at The Column Room Restaurant, or wander around the gallery and second-hand book shop.

5. Museum of Somerset

For those rainy days, attractions such as the Museum of Somerset offer a fun and educational way to stay indoors when the sun goes in.

The Museum of Somerset is based in Taunton's centre in the great hall of a 12th-century castle. It offers an insight into the fascinating local history of the county.

The museum is comprised of nine themed galleries, each of which has a story to tell about the history of the south-west and England, dating back to the middle ages.
