All about Southampton

Known as the cruise capital of Europe, Southampton sees over four million visitors a year, not only for it's ports and overseas connections, but for the many music venues, museums and art galleries that it offers too. It's the largest city in the county of Hampshire and sits on the south coast, just 75 miles south-west of London, dating back to the stone age, with historical finds suggesting pre-Roman inhabitance. The annual Southampton Boat Show is one of it's popular attractions with over 600 exhibitors and lasting a week long at the city's waterfront. Now over 45 years old, the show celebrate's Southampton's links with the sea and features a plethora of acts, exhibitions and unique vessels. The vibrant music scene in Southampton has also brought acts like David Bowie, The Killers, Amy Winehouse, Manic Street Preachers and many more to the Guildhall and the Mayflower Theatre. Other local venues have also embraced Southampton's love for music and many pubs and clubs have seen the likes of Oasis, Radiohead, Green Day, The Libertines and many top dance music acts through the years. The lively mixture of events and shows are often supported by the 24,000 students that attend the city's University, which is the largest in the South West with 7 campuses including the National Oceanography Centre and Southampton General Hospital among it's teaching facilities.

Sport plays an important part in Southampton, named 'fittest city in the UK' in 2006 by Men's Fitness magazine which is mostly down to the healthy lifestyles adopted by it's in inhabitants. Not only are there a range of green parks and conservation areas for joggers and fitness enthusiasts, but they also boast a Premier League football team (nicknamed The Saints) who attract big crowds at St Mary's Stadium, especially when the local derby with Portsmouth F.C. is on the bill.
