If you’re heading to Chester and fancy catching some live music, you’re in luck. The beautiful walled city of Cheshire is awash with awesome gig venues and we’ve picked out five of the best.

1. Alexander’s

If you’re into jazz, blues, rock or soul, you could do a lot worse than head down to Alexander’s. No matter when you visit, you should find something on. If you’re musical yourself and feel brave, they even put on a regular open mic night (usually on Tuesdays). Apparently, Duffy (remember her?) started off here…

2. The Cellar

Previously crowned Chester CAMRA pub of the year, The Cellar on City Road is the perfect venue for those looking for something of a late night. A party atmosphere prevails at all times and you’ll find some of the best bands on the circuit performing every Friday and Saturday night.

3. The Compass

A little more sedate than The Cellar, The Compass combines a cosy pub atmosphere downstairs with a fab gig venue upstairs. Expect music leaning to towards alternative, acoustic and rock. It gets busy, so you might want to book.

4. Kash Bar

Diddy in size, but big on entertainment and atmosphere. Clever use of space means the Kash Bar regularly hosts full bands and acoustic nights.

5. The Ship Inn

Feeling a little delicate? The Ship Inn could be the perfect port of call after a late night. A lovely pub overlooking the River Dee, it offers a relaxed drinking environment and welcome, relaxing live Jazz on Sundays.
