Cardiff Welsh Food Fest

Wales’ capital city hosts a whole season of entertainment and events from the 21st June to the 6th September for this year’s Cardiff Summer Festival. From top class sporting events to colourful street parades held at various locations throughout the city, many of which are free to attend, Cardiff is a lively and vibrant place to be this summer.

Events at Cardiff Castle


June is the month for jousting. The 21st and 22nd will see the castle grounds transformed into a medieval playground for the Knights of Royal England and their jousting displays (ticket only event). The evenings of the 4th and 5th of July see The Lord Chamberlain’s Men take stage in the castle walls to perform Shakespeare’s greatest love tragedy, Romeo and Juliet (ticket only event). The 12th July sees the free entry Tafwyl Fair at the Castle, the main event of the week long Tafwyl Festival, a celebration of the Welsh language. Tafwyl Fair hosts live music and literature as well as traditional food and drink stalls. Finally, August hosts the Grand Medieval Mȇlée on the 16th and 17th. This trip back to medieval times sees battling medieval knights, a traditional medieval village to explore and much more (ticket only event).

Events at Cardiff Bay


The gorgeous summer setting of Cardiff Bay hosts the Cardiff International Food and Drink Festival from the 11th to the 13th July. Free to visit, meander around the various stalls trading in everything from cheese to chocolate with the added entertainment of live music to enjoy. Taking to the water, the 26th and 27th July host the Welsh leg of the P1 SuperStock Championship. Hailed as the ‘Welsh Grand Prix of the Sea’, race boats speed through a watercourse laid out in the bay. The 10th August mixes boats and cars in the free to attend Classic Car and Boat Rally whilst the bank holiday weekend sees the Extreme Sailing Series return to the bay as part of the Cardiff Harbour Festival.

Other notable events include ‘The Big Gig’, Cardiff’s very own musical talent scouting competition taking place at The Globe from the 1st to the 3rd July (ticket only event). Cardiff Carnival transforms the city centre into a wash of colourful parades and performances on the 9th August and Cardiff International White Water plays host to the White Water Fest on September 6th. Take part in a range of adrenaline pumping water sports or simply relax and spectate whilst enjoying a host of live entertainment.
